City for All

The actions are part of the City for All research project that aims to empower the marginalized inhabitants of the old city of Nicosia, who are currently threatened with displacement due to an urban regeneration process. Since the end of October, the project team has organized two actions in the former Phaneromeni school, welcoming the displaced elementary school students in 2020. Opening the courtyard for the students to play was the first action, and a cinema afternoon was the second. The aim of the actions is first to reverse the students’ and parents’ negative feelings and disappointment regarding the complicity of the University of Cyprus in the urban regeneration process. Secondly is to support urban dynamics and to introduce programs that may keep the courtyard open to the city. Thirdly is to investigate the spatial practices of the children and women in the old city where men dominate the public spaces.
